Cleaning tools afterward requires a solvent, such as turpentine or mineral spirits. Staining doors isn’t as common as staining any other wooden piece but the outcome is always astonishing.
After it has dries thoroughly, give it a coat of Butcher’s Wax as well, it’ll really shine it up. But a topcoat would be required as kitchen cabinets are high traffic items and you want to keep them easy to clean. I will say that I go the extra mile and sand all my wood to raw before staining or painting.

Like Minwax, Varathane helps make the wood water-resistant as well and repels water absorption, but is not 100% water-proof. Minwax is a clear, water-based, and oil-based long-lasting protective finish. It gives durable beauty and protects any interior wooden surface.
If the section is much paler use stain otherwise use oil. But as I’ve already said trying to match the wood color isn’t that easy because you can’t really say how finish will change the color of the wood after drying completely. This option is suitable for cabinets, doors, trim, and paneling.
Gel stain is particularly forgiving withsplotch-prone woods like birch, cherry, maple, and pine. These varieties tend to absorb thin traditional stains unevenly, looking messy and unfinished no matter the number of thin coats, but accept gel stains easily. By coating the surface rather than seeping into the wood grain, a gel stain creates a professional-looking finish on even these most stubborn wood surfaces.

I’m currently working on a dining table for our British Colonial interior using Red Oak and was concerned with color matching the existing dark woods. Last, is the redder of the two dark stains we experimented with. Although, no red came through with the pine at all.
I’ve experienced the panic of a finish that looks totally different than the one I pictured in my head, and I try to avoid any surprises with a few test pieces first. I don’t know that you can stain over with exterior and get the UV protection. Unless the wood is going to bake in the sun, it will be fine. They do, but I am not sure how it would protect the interior stain from fading. You might have read that Watco and Minwax Tung Oil Finish are the same thing.

With oil-based poly, I haven’t noticed any difference. In the water-based or oil-based debate, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Both finishes offer about the same level of protection for your wood, varathane vs minwax stain but the principal difference is in the appearance. Both Minwax and Varathane offer a wide selection of oil and water-based polyurethane, though Minwax’s polyshades are only available in oil-based versions.
Varathane supplies many markets including begainer and several specialty markets with price competive products. While Varathane has a product for any refinishing job,non are the best available for that piticular application. My project was paper and mod podge over glass. I was scared that I was going to have take it all off and start over. Every other source said it wouldn’t and that I would have to take it off with mineral spirits. Review: Best Wood Stain
And if you re-stain with the same exterior color it will be darker. You may need to go lighter with the exterior stain to keep it close to what you are looking to have. I’ve heard countless reports of spar urethane (including “minwax helmsman”) just peeling off of outdoor wood projects after a few months/years. Apparently it can’t hold up to the constant UV and humidity changes. A marine spar varnish for boat use might work better, but I’d lean towards using a penetrating oil and just re-oiling every few years.
Again it’s only an opinion, but I have used Minwax religiously for many years. The unfortunate reality is that you can only stain bare wood. Varthane’s stain/poly is pretty the same as Minwax’s Polyshades and only suitable for finishing dog houses. I haven’t needed to use any of my quality brushes, yet, but I have been going thru tons of rags! I have also used foam brushes and cheap bristle brushes from the dollar store. I keep them in separate plastic bags while painting/staining any given project.
If this is a true DIY job, I’d try to stick with a single component product as they tend to be simpler to work with and you don’t have to worry about waste. Bona Mega Satin would be a good place to start – along with a stain or waterborne sealer as your first coat. And, don’t forget about your local professional hardwood flooring craftsman. Many times, a wood floor is not a great DIY job – may be better to get them involved now rather than later on. Note – General Finishes also has an oil based stain line, I have yet to try it.
It is considered one of the most durable coatings for the protection of wood. It is used ideally for wood related work, furnishing work, wooden doors/cabinets/floor. Without preparing the wood before staining it, you run the risk of having uneven, blotchy patterns. Using Varathane’s Premium Wood Conditioner for example, all you need to do is apply it 30 minutes before the stain of your choice and you are good to go. If you apply Minwax Stainable Wood Filler, let it harden, sand it down, and you can begin staining in no time.
